All classes and workshops are held in the Burlingame Room at the Ball Garden Visitors Center, Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, unless otherwise noted. Green with Envy - MONTHLY TOUR

Thursday, April 10th
10:00am

You will be “green with envy” when you see our gardens bursting with its bouquet of spring arrivals.  As the phlox creeps and the ferns peep, we will be discovering plants that can be many shades of green.  Let’s look for emerald, chartreuse, and sage in the gardens!

Container Gardening Fundamentals

Friday, April 11th
10:00am

Learn the principles and practices of successful container gardening from NC State Extension. Best practices for container selection and size, potting media, fertilization, and watering will be discussed. Discover winning combinations of annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables that can be grown successfully in containers, opening up new gardening possibilities in small spaces.

LSG Spring Bedding Public Plant Sale

Saturday, April 26th
9:00am-1:00pm

Petunias, begonias, marigolds and more will be on sale at the annual Landscape Gardening program’s Spring Bedding plant sale. All of these plants will be grown and cared for by our students in the greenhouses this spring in preparation for this sale. Plan to buy some plants to support the students and the LSG program.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

 

Birds of the Sandhills

Wednesday, May 7th

We are delighted to welcome Susan Campbell, licensed hummingbird bander, researcher and Seasonal Naturalist for a talk about the birds of our unique Sandhills area. She will be introducing us to some of the most common species found in the area throughout the year.  Identification tips will be discussed as well as preferred foods, nesting habits and basic ecology. A variety of resources will be shared including a handout, online links and apps, as well as “old fashioned” field guides.

A Bloom with a View

Join our garden docents for a Spring walk to see what’s blooming this month and how the gardens are just starting to make their transition from Spring to Summer.

Gardening in Deer Country

Friday, May 23rd

Here in the Sandhills, deer are a reality in our gardens. Just ask your hostas how they feel about that! As we know, it’s not only hostas that they love to munch on. Come and learn about a few tactics to deter them, but more importantly learn about plants that deer don't prefer to eat!
